Composting is a natural process which utilises naturally occurring micro-organisms to degrade organic matter. The techniques employed at White Moss are designed to accelerate and control this process.
Green waste delivered to the site is initially shredded to provide a consistently sized mix of materials. This is then formed into large piles known as windrows, shaped to ensure that the temperatures within the piles reach up to 65 degrees centigrade, this ensures that any weed seeds or plant pathogens are destroyed. The windrows are frequently turned to ensure that the compost remains aerobic and all the material reaches the required temperatures.
Following a composting period up to 16 weeks the compost resembles a dark and earthy type material with an abundance of fine particles. This is then screened to separate the fine particles from the coarse fractions to prepare the compost for sale.
This offers a true closed loop recycling service to all companies seeking to responsibly
dispose of their green waste.
