As members of the Growing Media Association we are comitted to the development of reduced peat and peat free products. Our New Life range offers a sustainable, effective and affordable alternative to our peat based products.
We have begun an environmental restoration scheme at our 400 acre Simonswood Moss site, which, when complete, will be one of the finest wetland habitats in the U.K.
Our Simonswood Moss site is NOT a Site of Special Scientific Interest nor is it a Special Area of Conservation. However, when peat extraction ceases, we intend it to become one of the most important wetland areas in the country.
In January 2005 we opened the UK's largest green composting facility dedicated to producing horticultural products.
The 20,000 m2 concrete pad will be able to handle in excess of 40,000 tonnes of green waste per year and all the green compost produced will be used to make horticultural products.
It has always been the aim of White Moss Horticulture to reduce its reliance on peat and in doing so use materials which are more environmental friendly.
By composting green waste we are not only achieving this aim but also recycling large quantities of waste from the local area.
The material produced will be used in various products in our retail range including our peat free multi-purpose compost, top soil, growing bags and our standard multi-purpose compost.
When these products are bought and used the recycling loop is completed and the customer can confidently claim to be helping the environment not only by using a product containing less peat or no peat at all but helping to use recycled materials.
It is important to realise that only when a product has been bought and used again it can truly claim to have been recycled.
